In 2005 a supernova exploded in the galaxy M 51, which is also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy. The type II supernova occured in the inner spiral arm of the galaxy ans was observed by German amateur astronomers. This picture taken by Hubble shows in the very center the progenitor star of the supernova, barley visible for the telescope.
