These Hubble data from 2005 and 2006 show the progenitor system for Supernova 2012Z, a supernova in the outskirts of spiral galaxy NGC1309. The system is thought to be a binary system containing a helium star transferring material to a white dwarf which eventually exploded. The annotated image of the galaxy shows the context for this system more clearly.
